Joan Kirchner teamed up with another of Cape Cod's finest musicians, pianist Richard Busch, in a performance of "All About Arlen" at the Wellfleet Congregational Church on Sunday, July 10, at 7:30 pm. The duo delighted the audience and, in the process, shed light on one of the most prolific figures, yet least recognized names, in Twentieth Century popular music.
Harold Arlen (1905-1986) composed some 400 songs, including some of the most widely recognized tunes in the Great American Songbook, from Get Happy and I've Got the World on a String to the entire score of The Wizard of Oz. Arlen collaborated with many great lyricists, including Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, and Truman Capote. In this new episode of their own noteworthy collaboration, Joan Kirchner and Richard Busch performed Arlen's music, and shared historical and musical insights into a great American talent whose legacy ranges from jazz to blues to operetta.
