Chatham Chorale Presents "The King of Instruments" at Dennis Union Church

Concert at Dennis Union Church features Soprano Joan Kirchner and Musicians Donald Enos, Julian Petrallia, and Joseph Marchio as organ soloists

Mozart proclaimed the pipe organ the “king of instruments.” The full house at Saturday evening's performance at Dennis Union Church would likely attest to the great composer's proclamation. The quality and range of the church's recently installed Casavant organ was on full display with the astute selection of pieces from Bach and Mendelssohn to Stanford, Vierne, and Britten.

 

There would, however, be tough competition for the overall superlative for the evening. Would it be Joan Kirchner's bell-like voice? The young organist Julian Petrallia's excellent delivery of the Mendelssohn Sonata that helped win him a spot in this year's entering class at the Eastman School of Music? The predictably superb musicianship of Donald Enos? The amazing versatility of Joseph Marchio as he moved gracefully from directing the Chatham Chorale chorus to coaxing sweet lyrical tones from the organ? The stunning performance of the Chatham Chorale members themselves? The audience as it joined the musicians in a stirring rendition of America the Beautiful? The awarding of a scholarship to a gifted young soprano?

 

Another resounding success for Joseph Marchio and the Chatham Chorale! Next up for the Chorale is Carmina Burana with the Cape Symphony on May 9 and 10. 

A Foot-Stompin' Concert at the Jacob Sears Library on Sunday, April 19, 3 pm

The Jacob Sears Memorial Library will host a concert by Jumpin' Juba (Steve Hurl, guitar and vocals; Bruce Ward, piano; Brian Flan, drums) on April 19. The concert is funded in part by a grant from the Dennis Arts and Cultural Council.

 

Jumpin’ Juba mixes regional blues from Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans together with roots-y rock & roll, jazz, calypso, and Latin flavors.  Steve is a songwriter and veteran of the Boston folk scene. His guitar playing draws from the great acoustic blues fingerpickers, and from the roots-y string benders of the 1950s. Bruce's burly piano work recalls such greats as Prof. Longhair, Otis Spann, and Albert Ammons. The band's CD releases  Bumpity Bump and Slap Happy have received regional and overseas airplay, and have garnered many favorable reviews in MA papers and on the internet. Check out Jumpin' Juba in this clip, and visit the group's website: Jumpin' Juba

Stephanie Miele and Lucy Banner to Present Music from Theater and Film

Vocalist Stephanie Miele and pianist Lucy Banner will present "Song and Dance: Music from Theater and Film" on Saturday, April 25. Come and enjoy a pre-concert dinner in Howes Hall and then join Stephanie and Lucy in the sanctuary for their musical tribute to stage and screen!

 

Tickets are $20 per person or $35 per couple. Dinner only: $15. Concert only: $10. Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, and concert begins at 7 pm.
